Custom Frame Project: Lego Framing

Framing Services / Custom Frame Project: Lego Framing

We have a saying here at SohoFrames: “if you love it, frame it.” And love of course is independent of the monetary value of the piece to be framed. With that in mind, we would like to present to you one of our latest custom framing projects.

Customised Framing: Lego Milky Way Galaxy

The client wanted to frame this Lego model to display on the wall of his daughter’s bedroom. The frame had to have glass to protect the Lego model, and a screw-release backing so that if any piece of the Lego set did detach it could be easily popped back into place by the client without returning the entire frame to our workshop (or calling us out to fix in their home).

The client wanted something special rather than a standard picture frame they were offered by other picture framing shops. They weren’t able to find anything suitable online either. They wanted something bespoke, highly customised, and had their own ideas as to how the finished frame should look.

Our Approach

The Lego Milky Way Galaxy set was assembled into a Lego “tray’ and this posed a small problem: the spacers needed to keep the glass away from the 3-dimensional model needed to sit flush on top of these walls. Pretty straightforward. However, on each corner of this Lego tray was a line of knobbles. We therefore needed to design a set of special spacers to hide these for a smooth harmonious look to this inside of the picture frame. It was a small but very important detail for the overall beauty of the frame.

After some CAD work, we milled these specially shaped spacers from Medite MDF and prepared them for custom spraying.  For the actual frame itself, we decided to keep the sleek Lego look by using a simple square modern profile with a black mirror finish, but enhanced with a subtle scattering of galactic blue sparkles. We think the finished frame turned out pretty well!
