Custom Frame Project: Lego Framing
We have a saying here at SohoFrames: “if you love it, frame it.” And love is independent of the monetary value of the piece to be framed. With that in mind, we would like to present to you our latest custom framing project, Lego’s Milky way Galaxy.
Customised Framing: Lego Milky Way Galaxy
The client wanted to frame the model and display on the wall, with glass to protect it, and a screw-release backing so that if any piece of the Lego set did detach for some reason it could be easily popped back into place by the client without returning it to our workshop (or calling us out to fix in their home).
The client wanted something special rather than the standard fare they were offered when visiting other framers, nor could they find anything online either. They wanted something bespoke and to contribute their ideas as to how the frame should look. The Lego set required a totally custom-made frame due to it being an object rather than a regular flat artwork.
Our Approach
The Galaxy was assembled into a Lego “tray’ and this posed a small problem: the spacers needed to keep the glass away from the 3-dimensional model needed to sit flush on top of these walls but on each corner, like the upper surface of most Lego bricks was a line of knobbles, so we needed to design special spacers to hide these for a smooth pleasing look.
We milled the spacers from Medite MDF with a cut-out at each end and a thin curtain to hide these knobbles. We discussed various frame profiles and colours and settled on keeping the sleek Lego look by using a simple square modern profile with a black mirror finish but enhanced with a subtle scattering of galactic blue sparkles. We think the finished frame turned out pretty well!
