We specialise in making tray or canvas floater frames for painted and printed artworks on canvas and linen as well as those mounted onto dibond or aluminium panels. We also offer this service for unmounted works along with giclee printing and drymounting onto various different substrates.
We make these types of special picture frames from a variety of solid woods such as oak, walnut, maple, tulip, beech, ash, pine, cherry, etc. Depending on your specifications, we can custom mill these types of picture frames to any profile dimensions (front face width, side depth, profile shape), as well as accommodating wider gaps around the canvas than the 5-10mm standard.
We can also frame canvases that are already stretched, but can also re-stretch them, if required, onto various wooden profiles as well as wooden-aluminium composite museum rims, which are particularly good for very large canvases. The largest canvases we can stretch in the workshop are generally around 2.5m x 1.5m. Please contact us for exact details. Stretched canvases can be displayed with or without a frame.
You are also welcome to design your own tray or canvas floater frame, the shape of the profile, the material, the colour, as well as its size. Just contract us with your requirements and send a sketch. We will do the rest!
Your tray and floater frame can be sprayed to match any RAL code, Dulux or Farrow and Ball colour with matt, satin or gloss finishes. A few example colours can be seen below.

Frame costs are priced by metre of circumference, but we calculate these to the mm so you only pay for what you get. Prices are exclusive of VAT.

Solid Wood 1
The most common tray profiles we use in solid wood have a 12mm front face, 40mm side measurement, which gives a 30mm internal measurement. Photo shows, from left to right, Tulip wood, clear wax finish, Limed Tulip, waxed Lime wood and waxed Oak. All the finishes shown on the Hand Finished frame page can also be made into tray frames. We can mill tray frames with almost any profile dimensions. A front face width of 5mm is normally the thinnest we can go. If you don’t see what you need please contact us.

Solid Wood 2
Just a few more of our lovely solid woods, including a black stained and polished example. We can use various woods when a black frame is required depending on the grain pattern requested by the client. Popular “blacl=k” woods are walnut, sapelie and tulip.

Solid Wood 3
If your canvas does not fit we can either re-stretch it onto a shallower rim or custom mill you a profile to perfectly fit your requirements. This photo shows a solid oak profile, 15mm front face, 90mm side measurement, which gives a 75mm internal space for the canvas, which we milled for a client. These stunningly modern examples of a profile suitable for framing both canvases and photography (if mounted onto dibond or aluminium – please contact us for details about this) are again made from solid timber plank, oak and walnut, but finished with transparent resin which we then polish to a mirror finish. Thin Wall Tray Frame Profiles1
The thin wall profile of these stunning examples, designed and made exactly to order by Curtis O’Dell in our Soho workshop are very popular. Everything is customisable, from the width of front face, which in these chevrons is 5mm, to the internal depth and “foot” width if a larger gap around the canvas is required.

Thin Wall Tray Frame Profiles 2
The same profiles as before, but from a different angle to display the corner joints, which are reinforced by splines. The size, number, and wood type of the splines can be customised. The example woods shown from bottom to top are walnut, black walnut, and oak. We can make these frames in almost any wood. Custom spraying is also available if a colour is required.

Two-Colour Custom Sprayed Floater Frame Profiles
This selection of tray or canvas floater picture frames have two different finishes. The outside is stained to show the grain. In this picture two of the samples are black stained and the other two have a chocolate walnut stain. The insides were grain-filled, primed, and then sprayed with a linen colour and a soft grey. All colour variations, stain-paint and combinations, as well as finishes, which could be matt, satin, gloss or mirror gloss are available. Just contact us with your vision.
