Custom Carved Picture Frames Dubai

SohoFrames of London has a worldwide reputation for making the most exquisitely crafted custom carved picture frames. All our frames are designed and built inside our five-storey picture framing workshop right in the heart of London’s historic Soho by Master Frame Makers Curtis O’Dell and Dylan Hall.

Exclusive Designs

The frame corner examples displayed on this page are either our own exclusive designs or made from initial rough sketches from clients. They are here to showcase the possibilities as well as being actual designs that can be ordered. Like all our custom carved picture frames, you can customise everything. The overall size, front face width, side depth, rebate and sight edge can all be adjusted to precisely fit the scale of any artwork or space. You can pick almost any type of wood. For example, if a frame example shown here is made from walnut, we can of course make it in another wood type like ash, cherry, oak, etc. We can also adjust the patterning. And of course, for designs with a pattern that flows uninterrupted around the circumference of the finished frame, we always adjust it so it fits any particular size.

Total Customisation

If there is something a client has in mind that is not shown here then we would ask for further information so we can look at making a sample. This can be anything from a proper technical drawing or a design idea simply sketched onto the back of an envelope. We can work with anything.
We can also custom spray paint any of our picture frames. You can customise the finish so that the grain still shows through, which can either be a stain or regular paint. The only difference being is that when a smooth flawless finish is required, we first grain fill the wood, prime and then spray. With a “grain-to-show” paint finish we do not grain fill. It is also better to use a deeply grained wood like oak for this. A stain is different. Being thinner and more translucent it works on many wood types.
To move forward, you can customise and commission any of the frame samples shown here and we will work with you on the sizing etc. We will first send a computer render of the finished design and then, if all good, produce a real physical sample. After the sample is signed off, we will make the actual frame.

Service Options & Delivery

We are happy to make and dispatch a frame as a rim only service to Dubai as well as any client in other parts of the UAE, but we can also, if the artwork is sent to us, produce a finished frame and dispatch that. Furthermore, we also offer a comprehensive fine art and photographic printing service. We can also send out physical samples of our exclusive picture frames as well as those of your own creations.

BIRDCAGE 1

We made this example from solid walnut timber, which we carved in several sections before being assembled into the finished picture frame. The frame profile is 10mm wide across the front face and 50mm deep.

This view shows the internal space, which was designed to give a large profile frame and beautiful lightness. Of course, you can customise every part of the frame. For example, we could gild the inside of the frame so that it shimmers with 22k gold.

Dark chocolate wood picture frame corner with a caved Islamic geometric patten on the top over a golden inside.

ISLAMIC ART INSPIRED 1

The core design of this example picture frame was influenced by Islamic art and we built the frame with the same airy principles as the original Lightness of Being. This too was made from walnut with a gold interior. This example has profile dimensions of 80mm x 40mm.

QATARI 1

These two examples have the same design. However, the leftmost example was carved from solid walnut plank and finished with an oil polish. The other example was carved from tulip wood and then gilded in 23k gold leaf. The profile size is 40mm x 40mm but any size of possible, and like all the picture frames on this page we can adapt them for the tray or canvas floater frame style.

The same custom engraved design, but this time in finished in our Desert Colours of lavender and beige with a 25% satin finish.

ISLAMIC ART INSPIRED

We set this beautifully carved walnut filigree design into a walnut support shell with a polished liquid copper base. Moving forward, we intend to create further examples of this design with different Islamic inspired patterns over other liquid metal finishes, which you can see on the Custom Colour page of our website.

AFRICA WALNUT 1

Carved from solid walnut, we finished this frame with a special recipe of stains and oil polish to achieve the final look. No mater what size of picture frame is needed, we can adjust the pattern so it fits perfectly around the entire circumference. This example is  110mm wide across the front face x 50mm deep.

Another view of the same profile. The following photos show the same design in different woods, and yes, if you would like it in bright pink, for example, or in 22k gold leaf, we can also do this.

We carved this example from solid American white oak timber hand selected from our wonderful timber yard. It has the same profile dimensions as the walnut example.

A different angle to display the way pattern of the two lengths match exactly up at the corners. We can do this whatever the size of the requested picture frame. This oak example has a light wax finish to protect the wood while keeping it as natural looking as possible.

For this example we also carved the side of the picture frame to match the front face design. The wood is Sapelie, which gives it a gorgeous coppery look.

With larger picture frame profile dimensions there are basically two ways to make these. The first is to carve the entire frame from solid timber and solid timber sections, like the walnut and oak examples above. The other option to reduce the cost and often the weight, is by making the frame a composite of different materials. We built this example around a Medite MDF core. Tulip wood is another material we can use. Composite builds can lead to significant cost reductions.

Smaller carved examples of the same pattern, leftmost from walnut, rightmost from oak. You can inspect any of our frame examples either in person at our workshop or via a video call.

AFRICA CUSTOM PAINT

Same pattern design, different finishes, leftmost solid walnut with a smaller front face width of 60mm but a deeper side depth of 50mm. The other example we custom sprayed white with a soft satin finish. Almost any colour is possible.

PUNK ROCKER 1

Well, we think it is a bit punk rock and we designed this original example to frame a photograph of the Sex Pistols. We carved this example from a slab of 50mm thick German acrylic (though we also use MDF as well as woods like tulip and lime for painted versions of this design). This example is black with a finish called Gun Gloss.

PUNK ROCKER 2

We carved these from planks of American Walnut, one with a twin row of studs, the other with a single row. Studs can be larger or smaller, and in any number of rows.

We carved a triple row of smaller studs into this deep walnut example. As we make these to exact specifications, we can increase the depth to fit an artwork like a stretched canvas (and we can also make this frame in the tray or canvas floater frame style) or a 3D artpiece. This example is 50mm wide x 50mm deep.

FLEMISH WALNUT 1

Wow. If we say so ourselves. A traditional design but with Curtis’s own twist, detailed in the next photograph! This solid wood picture frame is 120mm wide x 40mm deep.

This angle shows the “Curtis twist”. In the original old design of this classic picture frame the outer surface of the face was patterned with chisel marks. Curtis lifted the design into the 21st century by replacing simple chisel marks with tiny rows of punk rocker studs.

BISHOPSGATE BLACK AND GOLD 1

Inspired by a design seen carved into an old City building near Liverpool Street Station, we decided to make a suite of picture frame examples using this distinctive pattern. This example is 70mm x 40mm.

A single row of the same exclusive design. We made both the Black and Gold versions using solid Sapelie wood with the inner and outermost edges stained black and polished with oil. The central portions feature 22k gold leaf. This example is 40mm wide x 50mm deep. Like all our designs, we can modify this frame into the tray or canvas floater frame style.

This example has the same 70mm x 40mm dimensions as the large Black and Gold version but with a single diamond pattern. Made from solid walnut and polished with oils.

Solid white American oak with a single row pattern. This example is 40mm wide x 30mm deep. We can carve this into almost any profile size, and of curse, in any wood. Please just ask.

We adore this design! It gave us a quite a few technical headaches before we succeeded in making a picture frame that reached the required standard. This example is 62mm wide x 40mm deep.

These carved examples have a profile size of 45mm wide across the front face x 30 deep on the side. The leftmost example is oak with walnut on the right. Furthermore, we ensured that the pattern flows in an unbroken chain around the circumference of the picture frame whatever its size.
