Custom Coloured picture frames add an entire new dimension to the choices offered by a picture framing workshop. We offer something different than the standard fare of from pre-finished “confetti” mouldings. Here at SohoFrames we make every single one of our hand-crafted picture frames with closed corners. This is where we conceal the mitre join at the corners of the frame with a top spline. It’s a specialised technique that conceals the join and so prevents hairline cracks appearing in the painted finish. The result is a flawless picture frame that looks like it is made in a single unbroken piece.

COLOUR RANGES

We can custom spray any of the frame profiles you can see in our hand finished frame range. There are hundreds of colours to choose from. We spray to almost any RAL code, as well as matching home decor colours like F&B and Little Green etc, perfect when a client would like a picture frame or a suite of picture frames to either blend in or compliment the paint colours of the home or office. Matching Pantone colours is also possible. If there is a colour you would like that does not appear in any colour chart, we can usually custom mix this for you. This is often asked for when a client picks out a colour inside the artwork that they would like the picture frame matched to.

TYPES OF FINISH

We offer two basic types of coloured finish. These are opaque and translucent. The type of wood or material we use for a picture frame when a client requires an opaque finish depends on whether the wood grain is to show or not. If not, then we tend to use Tulip wood (also known as Poplar) as it has a tight grain and so requires minimum grain filling to achieve a smooth flawless paint finish. If the grain is to show we advise using something like Oak, which has a deeply cut grain.

For translucent finishes, which we call washes and are essentially wood stains, we use Ash. This is because Ash is a pale wood and so expresses coloured wood stains extremely well. Furthermore, it also has a beautiful contrasting grain, which adds to the overall effect.

Whatever the painted colour choice, opaque or wash, we can also apply coats of clear lacquer to give the frame a matt, satin or gloss finish. If the profile shape is made of flat surfaces (square, flat, rectangular) or smooth curves, then we can offer a mirror gloss finish.

SPECIALISED PAINT EFFECTS

We offer a range of different possibilities when it comes to creating truly unique picture frames for both artworks and mirrors. These could be glitter finishes where we add particles of metal to the paint colour. The colour of the glitter can be customised as can the base paint colour. We also offer different types of Pearl finishes. These can be either single solid colours or a mixture of two different colours. Almost always finished with gloss lacquer, they catch the light beautifully and change colour depending on the viewing angle. The colours can be as strong or subtle as you like. Whenever a bespoke paint or wood stain colour is desired, we will make a sample first for approval. There is often no charge for this as it helps build up our expanding catalogue of wall samples.

EMBELLISHMENTS

We can customise any of our custom sprayed picture frames in various ways. Rounded Corners are a way to add a further dimension of beauty to the overall picture frame. We can also engrave onto the frame, text, logos, and bespoke patterns. These can be subtle, for example, a word or a logo on a part of the frame, or a unique pattern or design that flows around the entire circumference of the frame. It is up to you and your vision, but whatever it is, we can help turn an idea into reality.
