FOOTBALL SHIRT FRAMING ISLINGTON
SohoFrames of London is one of the UK’s finest picture framers. We specialise in the framing of all sports memorabilia. That said, the main part of this work is the expert framing of the signed football shirts.
During the last fifteen years we have developed our own signature method and style. This means that we frame shirt full-size and with minimal intervention. What is “minimal intervention?” It means that we treat a football shirt exactly the same way as a piece of fine art. We don’t just fold it up and staple it to a card. Every shirt is examined, gently steamed to remove any creases (while taking care to preserve the signature) and then stretched over conservation board. This turns a 3-dimensional sports jersey into a 2-dimensional piece of art.
The shirt is held in place by a few stitches, which could either be tiny plastic T-tags or cottons, carefully placed in the existing seams around the hem, collar and cuffs. This is minimal intervention. It means that if the shirt is ever removed from the frame, it will look almost if not completely the same as before it went in. This is one of the reasons perhaps why we frame signed shirts for the many League Clubs that come to us, including the Premier League, individual top-flight footballers, as well as their many fans and corporate sponsors.
Everything about our football shirt frames customised. This customisation can be subtle ad inside the frame like the addition of engraved plaques, photographs and ticket stubs, or it can be to the actual frame itself. Rounded corners add a unique twist to the overall look of the finished frame, turning it into something unique and stunningly beautiful.
Although we can and do frame shirts in a huge variety of different frames, with or without rounded corners, almost any other style of frame is possible. We have framed football shirts in ornate gold frames, or custom sprayed in the team’s or sponsor’s colours. This could be the entire frame or just a small part. For example, we could spray the frame in white but change the colour for the sight edge (this is the small vertical surface of the frame lip that keeps the glass in place). It is an understated embellishment that turns the framed shirt into something really special.
You can also specify the finish on all of our custom colour and solid wood frames. The three types of lacquer we can apply are matt, satin and mirror gloss. And as mentioned, these work beautifully over natural solid woods like walnut, ash and oak, as well as painted frames.
Custom Carving and wood engraving offer the possibilities for further areas of customisation. This means we can engrave lettering onto the front of our solid wood frames, or create custom patterns like footballs or tiny players around the circumference of the frame or engrave the team’s logo into the centre or corners. It really just depends on your imagination of what you would like the finished football shirt frame to look like. Remember, your signed shirt is going to go on a wall somewhere to be appreciated for a very long time. SohoFrames can help turn it into a talking point, something to be admired by all.
And yes, we do offer a wide range of standard frames too in different profile shape sand sizes. Black standard frames are the most popular, and usually with clean elegant profiles such as 20mm wide x 30mm deep, a profile size that gives enough room to fit all the internal components, backing board, mounted shirt, top mount and glazing, comfortably inside the frame.
We also have some of the fastest turnaround times in the UK for our football shirt framing service. The time does depend on the type of frame required. For example, a custom carved design or custom sprayed frame will take longer to make than a frame made from pre-finished lengths. The normal turnaround time for a shirt framed in a standard frame is one week. However, we can often offer a 24 hour or 48-hour turnaround time too when something is urgent.
The turnaround time for Hand-Finished or solid wood frames is 10 days to 2 weeks, but we often turn this around faster too. This is because we have a team of highly skilled experienced shirt framers along with the latest CNC mount making machinery.
Although we frame most of the shirts that come into our workshop full-size, we can also fold them when the wall space is limited, or to match an existing style. There are a few blogs on our site too where you can learn a little more about our processes.

FAQs
Q. What is the standard turnaround time for framing a football shirt?
A. In most cases it is one week.
Q. This is a corporate gift, and I need it urgently. Can you frame a shirt more quickly?
A. We can usually frame a football shirt in a standard frame on a 24- or 48-hour basis.
Q. Does 24 hours mean sameday?
A. It often does, yes, but if something is urgent it is best to get the shirt to us as early as possible.
Q. What about weekends? Can I contact you on a Sunday for example?
A. We always try to answer all out-of-hours calls 7 days a week and respond to WhatsApp messages too.
Q. What does minimal intervention mean regarding your football shirt framing service?
A. it means that we use only the minimum number of stitches necessary when stretching the shirt. We place these in the cuff and collar seams and the existing hems to hold the shirt in place. It means that if the shirt was ever un-framed then it would look almost the same as before. We do not use tape all over it, glue or staples, and yes, we have seen this used on shirts brough into us for re-framing.
Q. How large is the frame when a shirt is framed full size with your technique?
A. A framed football shirt generally works out around 850mm x 850mm. It does though depend on the size of the shirt and the type of frame. The wider the frame profile the larger the outside size of the frame.
Q. Can I include photographs inside the frame?
A. Yes you can. We also print in-house if that helps.
Q. I need an engraved plaque. Can you also make these?
A. We can. Please see our Plaque page.
Q. I want a frame sprayed in the team colours of my shirt. Can you do this?
A. Yes, we can. We custom spray in an almost unlimited range of colours. This can either be for the entire frame or just a part, like the sight edge, for example, which is the small vertical surface on the inside of the frame next to the glass. We have sometimes sprayed this part a colour while the rest of the frame remained white for a subtle embellishment.
Q. Can you deliver?
A. We deliver worldwide.
