Minimal Intervention

So, what do we mean by this term, Minimal Intervention?

To frame a shirt successfully there are several processes that must be followed. One of these is the stretching of the shirt.

Modern football shirts are 3-dimensnsional slightly elastic sports garments. To ready them for their new life as wall art, we stretch them onto conservation or archival quality mountboard. We place the necessary stitches (which are either tiny plastic stitches called T-tags or sometimes cotton thread to match the shirt colours) in existing seams. These are around the colour, cuffs, and hem. We use only what is needed to keep the shirt in place. If ever the shirt was unframed it will look exactly like it did as when it went in. No unsightly holes everywhere. Furthermore we do not use staples or duct tape, etc and yes, we have seen it all in shirts that arrive in our workshop for regrading.

The Other Shirt Framing Steps Explained

The very first step is always to appraise the condition of the shirt and note any details such as signatures and marks / defects etc (if any).

We may then gently steam the shirt to remove any creases being careful to keep away from any signatures.

Number 3 is the stretching process. We use conservation or archival board as the backing for the shirt to rest on.

Photography. Once stretched we photograph the shirt and then upload this photo into one of state-of-the-art CNC mount cutting machines.

Mount design. Using the photo, we create and then cut a bevel-edged window mount from conservation or archival mountboard that exactly fits the shape of the shirt. We may have to cut several mounts, so we get the fit exactly right.

Additions. Now we add any extra features that are required (see below).

Framing

Quality check. Once this is done the shirt is now ready for collection or delivery. And we deliver worldwide.

Total Customisation

Photos

We can add photos into the shirt frame. Just let us have the files and we will size and print. We can even send you a computer render of what the finished shirt frame will look like. Any adjustments or changes can then be made before we go on to make the real frame. There is no cost for this. We print in-house using top quality materials and the latest professional 12-colour Canon printer with its Lucia ink system.

Engraved plaques

Adding an engraved metal plaque is a professional addition to a football shirt frame. The text can record the time and place the shirt was signed, and / or add relevance by adding a recipient’s name or occasion if the shirt was a gift.

Custom Colour

We can custom spray the frame in the colours of any football team (whatever league they are in, professional, amateur, even military). Custom colour touches can be subtle. For example, for a Spurs’ shirt we could spray the body of the picture frame white but add a dark blue highlight to the sight edge. The sight edge is the small vertical inside edge surface of the picture frame that sits just above the glass. It’s a nice touch. We offer several types of paint finish, matt, satin, gloss and mirror gloss.

On-Frame Carving

We can engrave into the picture frame any text, names, dates, team name, etc, as well as the Spurs’ Cockerel logo (for example). This could be in one corner of the frame, another subtle addition, but one that makes for a truly unique football shirt frame, turning the finished object into something that becomes the centrepiece of a room.

Picture Frame Types

The actual picture frame can be truly anything you like. We have framed football shirts in ornate gold frames, hand-finished frames made of solid polished walnut, as well as highly customised designs, often made to the client’s own design.
