HAND FINISHED FRAMES CAMDEN
Welcome to SohoFrames of London. We are makers of some of the finest hand-finished picture frames in the UK along with the swiftest turnaround times.
We specialise in producing beautiful custom or bespoke picture frames of any profile shape, size and finish using a variety of sustainable timbers that we purchase ourselves directly from a local FSC timber yard. And yes, we go there in person to select the timber we need to ensure that every picture frame we create if of the highest quality and craftmanship. Every piece of wood we use comes from the vast and sustainably managed forests in Canada and the USA.
The most popular woods we employ are American Black Walnut (it’s not black, but ranges from a soft tan colour all the way up to a deep chocolate), White American Oak, Ash, Red Cherry and Tulip (also known as Poplar) and Beech. However, we also use and can source other wood types. These could be Iroko, Pine of various types, Douglas Fir (which has a gorgeous swirly grain pattern) and Maple, a very hard pale wood.
We can also make picture frames from other more exotic woods. Coconut is one of these, and yes, it is a sustainable wood. For other wood types like Mahogany and Rosewood we can upcycle existing products into picture frames. These could be old furniture, doors, old school or university laboratory benches, etc. In this way we can give things that are often thrown out a new lease of life as a stunning and unique picture frame. It’s also a great way to preserve the history of a place or an old house.
We stock many “standard “profiles. Popular sizes are 15mm wide x 30mm deep, 20mm wide x 30mm deep, 17mm wide x 17mm deep, 30mm wide x 17mm deep and two further square sections 30mm and 40mm. We also offer many others, cushion, reverse cushion, angled, stepped, ribbed, hockey-stick, rounded and in many sizes.
We can adapt any of these “standard” profiles in terms or size shape and finish so that the picture frame works perfectly both with your artwork and personal taste. Even if it is for one small frame. There is often no charge for small alterations to profile shape and size.
Our frames also come in many different “flavours” (our term for the different coloured stains we apply to the wood). All the picture frame woods we use can be left natural and finished with a clear coat of wax or oil to protect the wood and enhance its beauty, but we stain to make the colour richer and / or darker. Colours such as Mahogany, Rosewood, Chocolate, used in stains look gorgeous when applied to walnut wood. After staining we normally finish the wood with several coats of tinted oils and waxes to compliment the stain. We often describe the fine solid wood frames that we make as Wall Furniture.
When brighter wood stains are required, we tend to use Ash. Ash is naturally pale but also has a marked grain pattern and so looks wonderful when stained. We make many frames from this timber and stain them every colour of the rainbow. In fact, we can produce wash stains to almost any RAL code. Bespoke colours are also possible. For example, when a client picks out a colour they like from inside the artwork and would like the picture frame to match. No problem. This is something we do all the time. We match the colour, make a sample, and then when approved go on to make the finished frame.
The finish on any of the frames that we make can also be further customised. Whether they are natural or stained, we can lacquer them, which both protects the wood and adds shine. The level of “shine” can be specified, and ranges from a soft satin all the way up to a polished gloss.
We can adapt all our regular rectangular or square shaped frames to have beautifully rounded corners too. This embellishment gives a beautiful and unique look to any frame and works well with a multitude of different artworks and home or office décor. Take a look, let us know what you think.
We also offer something called Enhanced Standard Frames, which is our take on improving the offerings from the usual pre-finished mouldings used by almost all picture framing workshops. These are often made from Obeche (a hard wood, but one that is also soft enough to mark with a fingernail). The quality of these is often poor, and the scope for what can be done to make them beautiful is therefore limited. For example, most picture framers will just push wax into the corners to hide the joins. With our enhanced standard frames mouldings, the joins are perfect and so do not need filling with wax. The colouring and finish are hand-applied in our own workshop. The care we use to make them is the same as the custom carved frames that we design and make.
We like to think we offer unrivalled customer service. You can contact us 7 days a week via WhatsApp message or call and even after hours we usually get back to you promptly.
