HAND FINISHED FRAMES HACKNEY
Welcome to SohoFrames of London, one of the UK and Europe’s leading picture framers who specialise in the making of fine hand-finished picture frames.
“Hand-Finished” means that the finished frame did not start life in the workshop as a pre-made length of painted or embellished wood, often of inferior or low quality, in a giant FAR EAST factory. Hand-Finished for us means that the wood started out as a plank of timber and was then milled to your exact specifications. Here at our 5-storey Soho workshop our wood comes from a local FSC timber yard. We go there in person to select the timber and if it is for only a small jo we bring it back on the train too to minimise our carbon footprint.
We offer many profile sizes and shapes, from simple but elegant square sections but also rounded profiles, hockey-stick, cushion, stepped and ribbed, redded and scooped. We can also mill a picture frame profile to your exact specifications. For example, if you like the look of our chocolate walnut frame sample but would like profile dimensions a little different from the sample then no problem. As well as adjusting our stock profiles we can also mill almost any shape and profile size to your exact requirements.
The most popular wood types we use are Black American Walnut, White Oak, Red Cherry and Ash. We also make picture frames from Pine and Douglas Fir. We can also upcycle unwanted furniture, desks, doors, draining boards, etc. (which are often made from more exotic woods like Teak and Mahogany) into new picture frames.
Many of the hand-finished picture frames we make we leave natural with just an oil polish. But we also offer various standard stains, chocolate walnut, as mentioned, but also mahogany walnut, rose walnut, and black. We can further finish frames like these by applying lacquers with different levels of shine, matt, satin, gun gloss and mirror gloss (there is a subtle difference. You can find more information about our custom spray service on the custom colour page of our website).
If brighter wood stains are wanted, and we can and have produced picture frames of all shapes stained in a range of rainbow-bright and pastel colours, we tend to use Ash, which has a pale colour and a delightful grain which shows off this kind of wood stain beautifully.
We can print artwork in-house too from your digital files or you can send us or drop your artwork in to us at our Soho workshop, which on a good day is only 30mins from Hackney. We can also organise artwork collection and delivery of the finished frame(s).
An extension of the hand-finished frame is the custom carved frames. We design and carve frames to order. They can be as flamboyant or subtle as you like. We can even make small changes to the standard profiles in the hand-finished range. For example, if you would like something carved into the frame, a name, text, logo etc into the frame or a design pattern of your own carved all around the rim.
We have excellent turnaround times. We can make hand-finished frames in as little as one week to 10 days. Custom carved frames can take longer depending on the complexity.
Just contact us for details. Advice and 3D renders are free and so too are most samples. Custom carved samples may incur a charge depending on complexity, but this is always off-set against any subsequent commission.

FAQS
Q. Why choose SohoFrames and not a framer right on my doorstep?
A. Before choosing any framer anywhere to trust with your artwork and money, we would point you to a blog on the Guide section of our website. It’s called “How Do I Find A Really Good Picture Framer?” Inside you will find eight good rules to consider.
Q. And if I after reading, I am minded to choose SohoFrames? What else might convince me?
A. We would say that additionally we have a fine reputation in terms of the quality and complete customisation of our hand-finished picture frames, our customer service, and our turnaround times.
Q. What makes up for not being right on my doorstep in terms of ease?
A. You can contact us 7 days a week. For the quickest response it is best to use WhatsApp. We always try to get promptly back to you even if it is out of hours, a Bank Holiday or a weekend. We can also organise a video call and arrange collection and delivery if needed.
Q. Can I visit you and do I need an appointment?
A. You are welcome to visit, inspect our timber, meet the team, and no appointment needed! If you would like to come before we officially open or after we officially close that too is possible. It is however best to let us know in advance though so we can be there for you. No problem.
Q. Are you easy to find or tucked away on an industrial estate somewhere?
A. Easy to find! We have a five-story workshop in the middle of Soho.
Q. Are all the images on your website of real frames?
A. They are. And you can see all the samples showcased on our website for real too. Every one is on our workshop wall (although some of the fanciest custom carved ones are in protective boxes).
Q. Can you sum up in one sentence a good piece of advice for anyone thinking about framing a piece of art or a photo?
A. Yes. As we often say here, “if you love it, then frame it well.” This way you will be able to enjoy for many years without ever having to say, I wish I had…
