HAND FINISHED FRAMES ISLINGTON

We make what we believe to be some of the finest hand-finished solid wood picture frames in the UK. Based in central London for over 15 years, we make all of our picture frames in-house in a 5-storey workshop with an interesting history.

Our definition of hand-finished is that the entire frame begins life in our workshop as a plank of wood. We mill, shape, sand, stain and polish to exact client specifications. Furthermore, we offer some of the fastest turnaround times in the business. We can do this because we have a team of craftspeople, highly skilled and experienced in every aspect of this fascinating trade, the art of making picture frames.

POSSIBILITIES & WOOD TYPES

We have a stock of the most popular profile sizes and shapes and in the most popular wood types. Walnut is probably the most popular, followed by White Ash. The two serve different purposes, one being a natural soft brown colour, the other pale with an enticing grain. Walnut looks fantastic with just a few coats of hard wax oil, but we also offer several shades of standard stains to alter the natural colour. These are Chocolate, Mahogany, Rosewood, and Black.

We also create wood stains to order. When brightly coloured translucent stains are required (we actually call these “washes”) we use Ash. As mentioned, it is a pretty much uniformly pale wood with the added bonus that it accepts bespoke colour washes extremely well. The rich grain highlights the effect. As with any of our finishes, we can also apply a matt, satin or gloss lacquer to our frames. For certain profile shapes, ones with flat or curved surfaces, a mirror gloss finish is possible. We keep a stock of other wood types too. Sapelie, Red Cherry, Tulip (also known as Polar), Douglas Fir and White Oak.

BESPOKE PROFILES

We can alter the profile size of any of our standard solid wood mouldings to either match something you had framed elsewhere, or to best suit your artwork. This could mean trimming the front face width by even a millimetre, or altering the side depth. Something we often do is to make the rebat, or frame lip, wider. This is usually asked for when the edges of the artwork need to be concealed due to damage or imperfections. There is often no charge for minor adjustments. If a profile size is not shown here on our website then we can mill it for you.

We also offer different profile shapes: square, angled, hockey stick, cushion, reverse cushion, ribbed and stepped, convex, concave, etc. You can also send us your own profile designs and we can mill these for you, even if it is just for one small picture frame. Further embellishments are also possible. For example, we can Rounded Corners to any of the profiles in our Hand-Finished range. The rounded corner adds a beautiful and unique touch to a picture frame and works well with almost any artwork, print, poster or mirror.

FURTHER CUSTOMISATION

When something truly unique is required we can engrave into the picture frame. This can be as subtle as a corporate logo or the artist’s name or sign into a part of the picture frame. For example, the side, or the sight edge (this is the small vertical surface nearest the glass). We can also carve patterns into the frame, around the entire frame face, and / or on the side. You can also send us your own visions for your picture frames or frames and we will work with you to make it a reality. Many artists like to have their own unique picture frame for their creations.
