HAND-FINISHED

 So, what do we mean by “hand-finished”? Let us quickly explain. Most picture framers buy in pre-finished mouldings via a handful of suppliers who in turn import those lengths from factories around the world. Pre-finished means that they are bought in already painted or foiled, etc. Once in the workshop they then cut to size and joined. The quality depends both on the moulding, which is fixed, and the skill of the framer. That said, it is often exceedingly difficult to make picture frames made with pre-finished mouldings perfectly beautiful as there are limits to the amount of finishing possible.

On the other hand, Hand-Finished means that the picture frame begins life as a plank of timber that either we or our wood yard mills to order. We cut and join the frame just like a pre-finished frame but this time we control every part of the process. The result is a stunning frame suitable for any artwork whatever it may be. Our Hand-Finished frames are of the very highest quality.

CHOICE

There are no limits to the amount of customisation possible with a hand-finished frame. We do keep a stock of standard profile shapes and sizes in various wood types. Walnut and Ash are the most popular. The profile shape could be square, curved, hockey-stick, reeded, angled, cushion, reverse cushion, scooped or stepped. Profile sizes can range from tiny to exceptionally large. However, if there is a profile shape or size that you cannot see on our website then we can custom mill this for you, even if it is just for one small picture frame. Minor adjustments to standard profiles are often free of any additional costs. For example, if you feel that a standard profile needs a larger rebat, perhaps to cover some damage or wear and tear around the edges of a canvas, or you would like the side depth to be a little shorter. No problem!

FURTHER CUSTOMISATION

You can also design your own profile shape and size. Added embellishments like Rounded Corners, and Custom Staining are also possible. You can also specify the kind of finish on any of our solid wood frames. The most popular are our own blend of hard wax oils, along with the various tints we offer that subtly change the colour of the wood. For example, our walnut range is available with its natural colour, as well as chocolate, mahogany, and rosewood tints, making sure that we always have something to match any artwork. Additionally, we can also apply either a matt, satin, or gloss lacquer to the finished picture frame. For some profile shapes, ones that have flat or smoothly curved surfaces we offer a translucent mirror gloss finish.

We can also Engrave onto our Hand-Finished frames. This type of customisation can be as subtle or flamboyant as you wish. It could be a company logo or brand on the edge of the frame, or an inscription, or even a complete bespoke pattern that flows in an unbroken line around the entire circumference of the frame. We pride ourselves on turning client ideas into reality.

Whenever we are tasked with creating highly customised picture frames for our clients we always make a sample, which is often free of charge. The client can then examine this either in person in our workshop or via a WhatsApp video call. We will then address any alterations if required and only when the client is perfectly happy go on to make the actual picture frame. FURTHER CUSTOMISATION

When something truly unique is required we can engrave into the picture frame. This can be as subtle as a corporate logo or the artist’s name or sign into a part of the picture frame. For example, the side, or the sight edge (this is the small vertical surface nearest the glass). We can also carve patterns into the frame, around the entire frame face, and / or on the side. You can also send us your own visions for your picture frames or frames and we will work with you to make it a reality. Many artists like to have their own unique picture frame for their creations.
