TRAY OR CANVAS FLOATER FRAMES HACKNEY
TRAY OR FLOATER FRAMES HACKNEY
Are you looking for Tray or floater frames Hackney? We offer professional canvas stretching and floater frame framing for both artists and collectors of artworks on canvas. Our team is highly skilled and experienced in restretching artworks onto new support rims as well as the making of floater frames to display them in.
PROFESSIONAL STRETCHING SERVICE
Many artworks we see require restretching. This is because the existing stretcher rim is unstable or out of true, or, if someone cut the canvas out from the original stretcher rim for transport or storage.
We offer two types of stretcher rim. Both are of the fixed rim type and so they do not have wedges. The first is wooden, made from finger-jointed Pine so that the lengths remain straight and the second is a museum standard wood-aluminium composite rim. These types of stretcher rim are perfectly true and will not warp. They are especially suitable for larger artworks with or without an additional floater frame.
We will examine all artworks brought to us for stretching and make you aware of any potential issues. Stretching does stress the canvas, which can be an issue if the work is old, fragile, or damaged in some way. Heavily textured paint can also flake, and even if not textured, cracking can occur where the canvas is folded around the rim, especially if it is not possible to stretch the canvas along the existing fold lines. That said, we have many years’ experience dealing with all types of canvas, antique and modern and take care to minimise any risk to the integrity of the artwork.
CONSERVATION & REPAIR WORK
When a painting is cut out of the original stretcher, or was trimmed after stapling, then there may not be enough spare material to restretch the work properly. If this is the case there are a number of possible options, some relatively inexpensive, others not so much. The recommended way to fix this is to either strip or fully line the canvas in question. This work is carried out by a conservator, which we can arrange if required. The skilled conservators we us can also repair other defects in canvas artworks, everything from cleaning to the invisible repair of major rips, holes, and missing paint.
FLOATER FRAMES
We offer a large range of floater or tray frames. This type of specialist picture frame works with paintings and prints on canvas as well as those painted onto board. There is not option to have glass with this type of frame so that is something to consider when choosing the right frame for any particular artwork.
There are four main types of floater frames.
STANDARD GALLERY
These profiles come to us pre-prefinished via our suppliers who in turn import them from Italian manufacturers. The quality and choice are good. These profiles are often made from either Pine or Obeche as the base wood with either a smooth painted or woodgrain finish. Colours are limited to black or white. There is also a range of wood veneers, oak, and other wood colours. They are very popular due to their price point and work well with many artworks. These are the kind of mouldings we go to when a client needs our same day or fast framing service.
CUSTOM COLOUR
Every time a client asks for a custom colour frame then we make a sample for the wall. We use the sample profile shape and size for our samples to keep things uniform for the website. Bi-colour tray frames are also a possibility. These can be a mixture of paint or stains. We spray to almost any RAL code but can also colour our tray frame profiles to other codes, matching Pantone colours, home décor colours, or even colour matching the frame to a colour picked out from the actual artwork. Regardless of whether the colour is paint or a stain, you can also choose the finish. This could be matt, satin, or gloss. We also offer polished mirror gloss on some profile shapes.
SOLID WOODS & CUSTOM MILLING
Our solid wood hand-finished floater frames are of the highest possible museum standard quality. We mill these to exact client specifications inside our own workshop. We select the timber ourselves from a local wood yard. Walnut, Oak, Ash, and Tulip are popular choices. We often stain these woods to subtly change the colour. Walnut for example could be natural, chocolate, mahogany or rose. Ash, if not natural, expresses brighter stains extremely well. Tulip works well stained black. We usually apply several costs of hard wax oil to protect the wood. If there is a profile shape or size, you cannot see on our website then please just let us know what you would like and we will make a sample for you. There is often no charge for this.
CUSTOM CARVING
Our custom carved frames allow you to exercise your imagination without restraint. Not only can the profile shape and size be anything you want, so too can be the patterning or design. There are many examples you can see on our website, but of course, you can customise every part of the frame, so you receive something truly unique to display your artwork.
We welcome clients’ own designs. Just send us a sketch along with any other information, profile size, shape, wood type, and frame size required and we will set to work turning this into a 3D render. If all okay, we will then make a real physical example, which you can examine either in person in our workshop or via WhatsApp video call. If we need to adjust, we will make a further sample until it is perfect.
