TRAY OR CANVAS FLOATER FRAMES WESTMINSTER
Are you searching for canvas tray or floater frames Westminster? Then you have landed on the right place! Our expert team here at SohoFrames have many years’ experience in the design and building of the most fabulous tray or canvas floater frames in the UK.
We offer various types of this specialist picture frame, along with some of the fastest turnaround times in the country. You can find our workshop right in the centre of Westminster’s historic enclave of Soho. Our workshop is an old five-storey building with an interesting history. Five floors of picture framing, which includes professional printing, onto many paper stocks, including canvas, which of course is the most popular artwork type for tray or canvas floater framing.
STRETCHING
Before a work on canvas can be framed then it must first be stretched. We offer a professional canvas stretching and re-stretching service. Many of the artworks we receive for our floater frames Westminster service arrive rolled in tubes, or on old stretchers that cannot be used, perhaps for reasons of fragility, rot, or because they are out of true. If this is thew case, we can re-stretch these works onto new solid stretcher rims. We offer two types of stretcher rim. The first is a standard rim, which is made from specially shaped finger-jointed Pine. We can also make these from Tulip wood (also known as Poplar) if required. The other rim is a wood-aluminium composite rim. These are extremely rigid and perfectly true, and so suitable for larger canvases or for those that are going to be hung on the wall without any additional framing.
TRAY OR CANVAS FLOATER FRAME TYPES
There are broadly two categories of floater frame, pre-finished and hand-finished.
Pre-finished tray profiles are available in several different profile sizes and finishes, both smooth and woodgrain. We have a selection of these frames in black and white, but also in a wide range of wood veneers, some with natural wood colouring like oak and walnut, others with colours like Lime and Grey.
HAND-FINISHED
Most of the tray or canvas floater frames we make for clients fall into the hand-finished range. We make all these on-site, custom milling the profiles to your exact specifications so that the finished frame perfectly compliments the artwork.
There are many different wood types to choose from. These include Walnut, Oak, Ash, Beech, Cherry, Maple, Pine, Douglas Fir, and Tulip (also known as Poplar). We can make these frames for our floater frames Westminster service in almost any profile size and to accommodate any thickness of canvas, useful if your artwork is already stretched.
You can specify the profile size too. The narrowest front face width we offer is 5mm. We join what we call “Thin Wall” floater frames using splines, which can also be decorative as well as functional depending on your requirements.
The actual finish of the hand-finished solid wood frame can be natural with just hard wax oil to enhance the natural beauty of the wood and to protect it. We can also apply either a matt, satin or gloss lacquer to the finished frame.
CUSTOM COLOUR
There are two types of custom colouring available, stain and paint. We offer a gorgeous range of standard wood stains. For example, you can choose between natural, chocolate, mahogany and rosewood colouring for our walnut frames. If black is desired, we tend to use Tulip wood.
When brighter wood stain colours are requested, we use Ash, as it is a pale wood with a beautiful grain that accepts wood stains very well. We have made many frames with wood stains (or washes as we call them) in every colour of the rainbow and more. There are hundreds of colours to choose from the RAL palette. We can also match Pantone colours and home décor paint colours like F&B and Little Green etc.
If solid colour is desired, then we spray using two-pack acrylic paint for a smooth flawless finish. The standard level of shine for these frames is matt, which has 10% shine, but we also offer satin, gloss and mirror gloss too.
Many specialist paint finishes are also available. These include Pearl, both solid colour and two-tone, glitter, tortoiseshell, etc. Our floater frames can also have a mixture of stain and paint, i.e., a smooth flawless inside in say, cream, but with the front face and outer side in polished walnut. Literally any combination of colour and material is possible.
CUSTOM CARVING
Our floater frames Westminster service is often used by artists and art collectors, both professional and amateur, who require unique tray or floater frames for their works. Here at SohoFrames we specialise in creating these kinds of custom carved frames to exact requirements, offering a full consultation, design and creation opportunity where the only limit is the imagination (and perhaps what is technically feasible). We can adapt any of the designs you can see on our custom carved frames page into the tray or canvas floater frame style.
If you have a design of your own in mind, then please just send us a visual or a sketch and we can turn that into a working drawing and go on to make a real physical example. There is often no charge for this service.
