The circular frame has a rich and ancient pedigree as any visit to a national art museum in any country will attest to. These round and oval frames vary in style from the simple elegant cushion profile to the most fabulously ornate and detailed: just take a look at the Del Tondo in Florence’s Uffizi Museum.

For here on we will use “round frame” to describe a picture frame in both circular and oval appearance. We make many “standard” profile shapes in both solid woods and from sheet material like acrylic, Medite MDF and Valchromat (a high-density engineered panel material available in many colours).

The most popular profile design for a round frame is the square profile. We make many of these in walnut, oak and cherry wood, often staining the base wood to achieve a richer colour. The finish can be anything from a simple oil polish all the way up to a transparent resin lacquer with a mirror polish. We often use white ash when a coloured stain is required. And just like out spray-painted colour selection, there are hundreds of colour choices, and each can be finished with either a matt, satin or gloss lacquer, if required of course.  We also carve these round frames in many other profile shapes, hockey-stick, cushion, angled, etc. We can turn virtually any conventional picture frame design into the circular format and even make round and oval picture frames to your own design.

We make most round frames in sections, especially if the wood is to show (i.e., not painted). We do this so the grain flows beautifully around the circumference of the frame. Each section catches the light in a different way. We use a variety of different joints to knit the sections together. We like to think that our round frames rival the quality of the finest furniture. The choices are technically unlimited. It all depends on your vision and imagination, and we will work with you every step of the way to ensure you receive a round or oval frame that exceeds your expectations.

The rounded corners give a regular rectangular frame a unique and beautiful appearance and works well with almost any artwork. Frames can be solid wood, stained in a huge variety of custom colours or spray painted, including liquid metals like brass white bronze, copper and chrome as well as specialist mirror gloss , pearl, glitter etc. It all depends on your imagination.
