There is really no limit to the level of customisation possible. The frame can be as simple as a square section ring, or as elaborately carved as you like.

SOLID WOOD

We can turn any of the frames you can see on our Hand-Finished Frames page into a round or oval format. Walnut is a popular choice due to its rich colour profile and beautiful grain. We can also stain the natural wood to deepen the colour or move it into a different part of the red spectrum. Chocolate, Mahogany and Rosewood stains look gorgeous too and work with many kinds of artworks and home décor.

The frame profile can be of any shape. We make these frames with square or rectangular profile shapes, which is where the front face is flat, but also with hockey stick, cushion, reverse cushion, scooped, stepped, ribbed and rounded shapes. There are many timbers to choose from. Walnut, as mentioned, but also American Red Cherry, White Oak, Tulip, Douglas Fir, Pine, and Maple.

We make our round and oval frames in sections, the number of which depends on the diameter and profile size of the desired frame. These joints can be something that we call “spoon”, but also “puzzle” and then “butt.” Butt joints are held together using custom carved butterfly wedges that we fit into the underside of the frame.

ENGINEERED SHEET MATERIALS

We use engineered sheet materials for two main reasons. The first is when a client requests a smooth flawless painted finish to their round or oval frames. In this case, we carve the frame in one piece from Medite MDF and then custom spray it to the desired colour and lustre.

The only time we use wood for this style is when the outside diameter of the desired frame is larger than approx. 1100mm. However, as with wood, the profile shape can be anything. We carve intricate designs into MDF same as we do into solid wood. If a spacer is needed, for example, when wishing to set an artwork back from the glazing, then we also use MDF as it means we can make the spacer in a single unbroken piece. We custom spray the visible part to either match the mountboard or the frame colour.

CUSTOM COLOURS FOR ROUND FRAMES

You can choose literally hundreds of different colours for your round or oval frames. Black and white, of course, but also every colour of the rainbow and more. We spray to almost any RAL code, as well as home décor palettes like F&B, Little Green and Dulux. Pantone colours are also possible. We often do this when the frame colour needs to match a company’s brand colours.

Special colours are also available. For example, a client once wanted their frame to be the bluest blue possible. We gave them several options. Probably the bluest colour in the RAL catalogue is Ultramarine, however, this wasn’t blue enough, which left us with two options. The first was to use a specialist automobile paint (which we sometimes do) or go for a pure standard pigment. When we say pure, we mean the base pigment with just a touch of white to make it opaque.

We can match frame colour to a colour in the artwork too. Finishes can be matt, satin, gloss or mirror gloss.

GOLD FRAMES

Two choices! The first is gilding. We can gild any of our round or oval frames with 22k gold. The process works for both frames made from wood and MDF. The second option is liquid metal.

CUSTOMISATION

We offer total customisation. This means that we can adjust any of the profile designs and sizes you see on our Hand-Finished Frames page and Custom Carved Frames page to suit perfectly the diameter of your intended frame. If you would like a design of your own or a particular profile shape, then we will work with you to turn your sketch or visual into a real physical example section. There is often no charge for this service.

We can also engrave onto the frame, which could be bespoke patterns or text.
